Wine - Trapiche Reserve, 2008 Malbec, Argentina - Defended by Condors

The time to start updating this blog regularly is here (ignoring the awkwardness of starting a blog, writing five words, and disappearing for a year). I am back!

I'll let the applause settle down. OK. Down to business;

I don't often drink wine. Five years ago, the wine consumption was rampant. It was the Time of Wine. Five years later, after the full Decline of Wine, I pick up a monthly bottle, visiting some old favourites and looking for new ones. So why not review them?

The bottle that caught my attention this Friday afternoon; a 2008 Malbec (red) from Argentina, Trapiche Reserve, $11.95 at the LCBO. The deciding factor was the label, pridefully profiling the condors guarding their vineyards in the Andes. While not as formidable as bears, I assume the large cathartidae is an adequate grape defender.

After the first sip, I gave it more time to breathe. Never a fan of Malbecs, the next few tastes better dominated the taste buds. A cold has stolen my sense of smell. It smells like wine, I think. The wine tastes nice though. While full flavoured, this Malbec is still smooth, a little sweet, and has a pronounced after taste. It is definitely a stronger tasting wine. It's good, but I wouldn't recommend it-- but there are few malbecs I would recommend as I generally like lighter tasting reds like pinot noirs.

It recommends pairing with cheese, so I gotta go...
